going to college is the most important aim of all middle school students. english is the most serious problem that most students are facing. reading is the most important and difficult part in english papers, especially in the english paper for the entrance examination to colleges. after many years of english teaching, i have got some advice on how to read a passage in english.
before reading, we ought to go through the passage very quickly to decide which kind of passage it is. generally speaking, there are three kinds as in chinese: expository writings, narrative writings and the ones expressing one’s opinions about something.we had better use different ways to deal with different kinds of passages.
1.for an expository writing, you’d better not read it detailedly sentence by sentence.. you can skim through the passage quickly to see what it is about. if the thing that the passage describes is one which you know about, you can directly go to the questions. there are generally 5 questions after the passage. you can choose right answers to at least 3 of the questions according to your knowing about the thing. then try to find out the sentences in the passage which can give you the answers to the rest questions. at this time, don’t worry that you can’t understand the sentences, because you know well about what it is describing. however, if the passage is about what you don’t know, it is not necessary to read it detailedly, either. you can get the main idea of every paragraph. generally, you can get the main ideas by reading the first sentences of the paragraphs. the next you should do is to read the questions carefully, to go to the passage again, carrying the questions, try to find the sentences where you can get the answers, and study the sentences carefully enough to gain the right answers. so you can deal with the passage within the least time.
1.for a narrative writing, you may go through it sentence by sentence because it is often very easy to read a narrative writing, namely a story. so don’t be afraid you can’t understand the sentences in it. after finishing reading it, come to the questions. my advice is not to choose answers according to your memory about the story. the answers should come from the story itself, not from your remembering. that is to say, go back to the sentence or several ones about the questions in the story once again. only in this way can you get the accurate answers. sometimes, the easier the story is, the more difficult it is to get the answers to one or two questions after it. you can’t get the answers in the story itself. they sometimes come from your understanding to the story or your opinions and your imaginations about the story. if your opinion is too unique or different from most people’s, you will get a wrong answer, because there may happen to be the same opinion as yours among the options. so try to be the same as most people in mind.
3. for a writing expressing one’s opinion about something, you may deal with it just as with an expository writing. that is to say, if it discusses a rationality that you are familiar with, it is not necessary for you to read the passage at all. please answer some questions directly. you can succeed in choosing at least 3 right answers. taking the passage “we are what we eat” as an example, which is in the reading part, unit 13 of senior book one. after you skim through the title and the first sentences of all the 5 paragraphs you can easily find that the writer is trying to expressing his or her opinion about what we should buy and eat if we want to feel well and look fine . as a senior middle school student, it is certain that you know a lot about it. so you can easily answer some questions correctly.
however, knowing how to deal with
comprehension part of an english examination paper is only a small part of learning english. the first and important thing to learn a foreign language should be working hard. only knowing some ways is not enough..
